The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique offers us a unique psychophysical approach to learning about ourselves through movement. When we access the underlying principles that govern our thoughts and actions, we gain a measure of control over our customary habits and our immediate reactions. Benefits of studying the Alexander Technique include ease of movement, relief from pain, stress, and tension; increased energy, improved coordination and poise. The Alexander Technique is practical for anyone; especially those interested in increasing awareness and clarity of mind.
The Philadelphia School for the Alexander Technique began in 1983 and has been training fine Alexander Teachers since that time. Students of the school who wish to become certified teachers undertake a three-year, 1,200-hour program of study. The school meets to study for an extended weekend each month from September through June. In addition, two weeks of study at residential workshops each year are required. This schedule is designed to allow people with employment to become teachers of the technique. Upon completion of the training hours, students will earn a certificate to teach the Alexander Technique, which will also prepare for, if desired, a certification by Alexander Technique International.
